1. So I entered a professional photography compeition the other week and a I won an award with this:
I was hoping to get better scores overall for the four prints I entered (knowing what I do now about what they're looking for I would've entered an entirely different set) but watching the judging I learned a lot about industry standards and was reminded that I have a good technical eye but I just need to trust myself more.

2. motorized asked me some questions, here are some answers:

favorite glee song? you're not gonna hear anything other than fanatic obsession over Defying Gravity from me today ;)

favorite colour? green. One of my teachers mentioned that it's the colour that people as a whole like most because we associate it with plants and freshness and other good things and that's kind of stuck with me :P

how long have you been taking photos seriously for? I've done photography since year 11, but I'd consider my official start in photography to be when I got my digital camera earlier this year.

where do you get your inspiration for your photos - especially your portraits? mostly Natalia's portfolio. She's worked with so many amazing very different photographers and it shows to me that there are a million different ways to interpret the same person and you really can do anything in a photo so it's a good chance to make your fantasies become a reality (well as much of a reality as a bunch of pixels can be that is :P). I'm so glad I come from an iconning/fandom background because for us photos are a commodity and I've noticed that makes me have a different perspective on photos than every other photographer I've met.

when are you coming to sydney to visit? XD when are you coming to Adelaide? ;)

3. Make a post with posters/dvd covers of your favourite TV shows, thus keeping a record of everything you've watched!

a)
I did a slight re-colour of an old wallpaper and it's so much better now

b)
see: a

c)
I didn't put much effort into it and I think it shows

d)
I'm not a fan. The image quality was torn to shreds in the process of colouring and even then the colouring doesn't look that great.

e)
lately I've noticed that with all of my various forms of graphics (icons, photography, wallpapers etc) I'm making at least one per day, however in the past few days that's been slipping so I've put that on my desktop to remind me to keep on churnin' ;)

Have you heard the Defying Gravity version of both Lea and Chris? I choose that one because they're harmonizing which is always cooler.

You're disappointed you've "only" won one award? :d It's a gorgeous photo, though.

and LOL @ your "make something" wallpaper. Does it work?
Joshblueymcphluey on November 14th, 2009 01:06 am (UTC)
yeah, I have but I think the harmony kills it for me for some reason, which is weird because harmonies are pretty much my favourite musical thing

the way the awards were given out wasn't like the top three pictures in a category win an award, it was if you score is above X you get a silver, if it's above Y you get a silver distinction and if it's above Z you get a gold. Idk, maybe I'm being too harsh but I expect more out of myself

lol, so far it just makes me feel guilty for not making anything XD

that picture is stunning

Congratulations you, that picture is beautiful!

Hahaha and omg I've had Defying Gravity on repeat since Wednesday, no lie, it's ridiculous!
My favorite color is green too! :) That's a fun fact though, about why so many people choose it.

And ooooh boy you weren't kidding! SO MANY posters! Awesommme <33

re: poll: while i thought Kurt was awesome, I'm sorry, I gotta give it up to Rachel. Lea's voice KILLS me, it's so beyond fantastic!

oh, to add to the green thing, it's also the colour that our eye is most influenced by. You know in PS how there are the red, gren and blue channels, the green one always is the most accurate representation of the depth that we see and that's why.

lol, and I cut so many shows that weren't good enough for a long enough period of time :P

Kurt was so good during the episode because the emotion of knowing that he's going to blow the note later on is so intense, but when I'm listening to to the duet I keep on wanting to just skip forward to Rachels's bits because that's when the goosebumps set in.

Congrats on the award :)

Haha you watched Kid Nation? I only caught a couple episodes of that but it was pretty good. And Roswell. When did you watch that? Did we talk about it because I don't remember.

Where's the option for the duet huh? :P
Joshblueymcphluey on November 14th, 2009 01:17 am (UTC)
yeah, it was so much fun I can't believe it got cancelled so quickly :P And as far as Roswell, it was years ago and I don't remember much anymore to be honest but I remember not liking season 1 at all, LOVING season 2 and then feeling 'meh' about season 3

hmm.. that can go under 'ugh, don't make me choose D:' :P
Steph: celeb: anna is looking off screenharbourlight on November 14th, 2009 11:11 am (UTC)
It was cancelled? I thought it just finished.

And I completely agree about Roswell. Season 2 was the standout. Don't you have a 'season 2 is always best' theory? :P
Josh: supernaturalblueymcphluey on November 14th, 2009 01:25 pm (UTC)
well season 1 finished but they weren't allowed to come back for a second :(

haha, I DID, but recently a hoarde of shows have completely messed up any theories regarding tv I might have ever had :P

CONGRATS on the photo! it's very striking, almost mural-like, if you will :D

Doctor Who <33 after I bawled my eyes out in series 2, I couldn't catch up with the rest, and now #11 has been cast! so behind...

ty :D

season 3 is a bit of a struggle to get through, but 4 is DEFINITELY worth the effort! 11 looks like he's going to be a bit o' fun ;)

The photo is great - i love the texture of it. The tree almost looks painted, which is just... hot. :D Congrats on winning the award! Just think, you can only get better.

2. there are a million different ways to interpret the same person
I'd never thought of that, and funnily enough, it makes a lot of sense. I've only really started taking an interest in specific models in the last few months, but I'd never thought to use the actual photos as inspiration. :D

I'm so glad I come from an iconning/fandom background because for us photos are a commodity and I've noticed that makes me have a different perspective on photos than every other photographer I've met.
lol, it's so true! When I'm shooting something, I look at the shot and go 'no, I wouldn't want to icon that shot, so lets change it'. You know what though? I think that it is a very valuable perspective to have.

when are you coming to Adelaide?
:P

Also, I wanted to say that I love love love love your new default. I was going to comment on it at ST but then I forgot. So here we are. It looks really, really good now. And I'm definitely going to download the psd tomorrow when I hit up my uni internet.
Joshblueymcphluey on November 16th, 2009 12:10 pm (UTC)
which is just... hot.
ugh, you should see this photo I took today, I just about cried with glee when I took it. I'd been working on another shot for a good 3 hours and then this other one just happened in about 10 minutes and it was SO perfect, ugh

I'd never thought to use the actual photos as inspiration
what's really interesting is comparing the different effects used on the same person and analysing why some work and others don't. Having a steady common thread throughout the photos gives us something to cling on to, compared to judging different pictures of different people with different lighting and colouring, you know?

I think that it is a very valuable perspective to have.
so valuable! and it also means making the image is coming from a place of play, rather than a place of work, which is so important. Also as a whole I think fanartists have a different perspective on art that the rest of the world has yet to see. Kind of like knowing mozart or idk, a famous painter or something and the rest of the world being oblivious and you can be influenced as much as you want by them but everybody would just think you're a genius. Kind of... XD

when are you coming to Adelaide?
soon I should hope!

:DD thankyou thankyou thankyou! I've just come back from looking at it on the school computers and it looks HORRIBLE there (slide the highlights end of a levels layer down to 225 to see for yourself :X) so I was starting to think I was delusional (which, wouldn't be a first :P) But I'm SO proud of it, I think it's my best of all time. The colours, omg! I don't even know how I did it anymore but I'm in love! ♥ :D
